Waring Library Society Records, 1977-present

The Waring Library Society Records, 1977-2011, documents the activities and actions of the Waring Library Society up to 2011. The collection is arranged into six series. (1) Programming (2) Membership (3) Governance (4) Financial (5) Publications, and (6) Collections. The bulk of the materials in this collection concern the history and operations of the Waring Library Society. Record types include correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, clippings, handwritten notes, speeches, photographs, CD recordings, advertisements, newsletters, prize essays, committee lists, and membership lists. The Programming Series, 1979-2011. 3 cubic feet. This Programming Series contains records relating to programs sponsored by the Waring Library Society. Documents include Annual Meeting records, Essay Contest documentation (both Waring and the Worthington Prize), information on both Sawyer and Waring lectures and lecturers, conferences, and student medical history functions. The series is organized alphabetically and by date. The Membership Series, 1978-2003, 1.25 cubic feet. The Membership Series is made up of documents related to Waring Library Society membership. Documents include member lists, member solicitation and student member solicitation. This series is organized alphabetically and by date. The Governance Series, 1977-2006, 1.25 cubic feet. The Governance series consists of the administrative documentation of the Waring Library Society. Executive committee lists, meeting minutes, bylaws, presidential reports and general administrative files are included. Annual Meeting minutes pertaining to the executive committee are also included. The series is organized alphabetically and by date. The Financial Series, 1978-2004, 1 cubic feet. The Financial Series contains the Waring Library Society's financial records. Documents include donations and memorials, budgetary files, expenditure files, gift details and treasurers' reports. The series is organized alphabetically and by date. The Publications Series, 1978-2006, .5 cubic feet. The Publications Series contains back issues of the Waring Library Society Newsletter from 1978-2006. The series also contains several files on national registers, a brochure and a book jacket. The Collections Series, 1977-present, .25 cubic feet. The Collections Series documents the acquisition and management of the Library's collections as received as gifts to the Waring Library Society. Files may contain information about donors, values and appraisals, deaccessions, conservation, and more. These files are stored at the Waring Historical Library as they are active organizational files. Please consult the WHL Curator for details.

The Waring Library Society was founded in 1977 to support the Waring Historical Library as a "friends of the library" group. Ward Curtis Worthington Jr. was born in 1925 in Savannah, Georgia. Raised in Beaufort and on St. Helena's Island, SC, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944-46. In 1947, Dr. Worthington married Floride Calhoun McDermid (and went on to have two children). Worthington was an attendee of the Citadel (Charleston, S.C.), where he received his Bachelor's of Science in 1952.
